Frequently asked questions

This page contains questions we get asked a lot about Laptop Alarm. Do you have suggestions for other questions? Please email them to us through the contact form

1. Can I use my Laptop Alarm license key for multiple laptops?

The license key is tied to the number of licenses you ordered. One license is valid for one laptop.  A multi license key is valid for more computers. For example, if you ordered 10 licenses you get one license key which you can use on 10 laptops.

2. Is Laptop Alarm Windows Vista capable?

Yes it is! Unfortunately not yet for the 64-bit version of Windows Vista. Syfer is actively working to make Laptop Alarm  Vista 64 bit compatible. This feature will be included in the next release, and will be available as a free update for all licensed users. Register here for our newsletter and be the first to know when the 64 bit version is available.

3. How do I set my unlock password?

Laptop Alarm uses your Windows login password. This means, that you need to set you're Windows password for Laptop Alarm to be effective. You can do so in your Control Panel. Click User Accounts and select your User name. Lastly, change the password by clicking Change Password. For optimal security, all accounts on your computer need to have a password.

4. When I lock my computer I can still unlock without a password

You need to set your Windows password before your computer is secure. (see FAQ 3)

5. I cannot hear the alarm

First, try to test the alarm in the preference panel. Set the volume slide to the volume you desire and click the test button.

If you don't hear an alarm, check if you have multiple sound devices installed in the control panel (some people have bluetooth audio). Laptop Alarm sounds the alarm through the default sound device. So, make sure the default sound device is the sound device that connects to the laptop's speakers.

6. What languages is Laptop Alarm available in?

Right now English and Dutch. We are working on German and French. So, stay tuned!

7. I can mute the alarm with my mute button!

Laptop Alarm disables the mute button. Unfortunately, some laptops have a so called "hardware mute". This means that the mute button literally interrupts the electric signal send to the speaker. There is not much a software program can do to prevent that. A solution to this problem is to make sure the "Use system speaker" setting  in the preference panel is checked.   However, some laptops even "hardware mute" that too. The good thing is, there aren't many laptops with a hardware mute.
